Word Boxes II

Parent guides child in drawing squares and circles to create word boxes, observing fine motor control and shape copying abilities. The agent coaches the parent to notice pencil grip, line accuracy, and independent shape reproduction — building foundational writing skills through playful practice.

What you'll need

Child seated at table with paper and drawing tool (crayon, marker, or pencil). Parent positioned nearby to demonstrate and observe. No other materials needed for basic activity.

How it works

  1. 1~45s

Start by drawing a simple square on your paper — make it nice and big. Show your child how you move your hand to make the four straight lines and corners. Now invite them to try copying your square right next to yours. Watch how your child holds the crayon and moves their hand. Does they make mostly straight lines? Can they connect the corners? Tell me what you notice about their attempt.

Watch for: Child attempts to copy a drawn square, showing emerging control of straight lines and corners.

  2. 2~40s

Now let's try a circle. Draw a nice round circle on your paper, showing your child the continuous curved motion. Ask them to copy your circle. Notice if your child uses a different hand movement for the circle versus the square. Does they close the circle or leave it open? Is the shape round or more egg-shaped? Compare their circle attempt to the square they just drew.

Watch for: Child attempts to copy a drawn circle, showing curved line control and continuous motion.

  3. 3~50s

Now let's see what your child can do from memory. Put your paper away and say, 'Can you draw a circle all by yourself?' Don't show an example this time. Watch how your child approaches this — does they hesitate or start confidently? Does their circle look similar to the one they copied earlier? Then ask for a square from memory too. Notice if your child can produce both shapes without a model.

Watch for: Child draws a circle without a visual model, relying on mental representation and motor memory.
