Here Comes the Ball II

Parent and child practice throwing and catching a ball with bouncing, focusing on overhand throwing technique and catching a bounced ball. The agent coaches the parent to observe throwing mechanics, catching coordination, and backward jumping movements — building gross motor skills and hand-eye coordination.

What you'll need

Open indoor or outdoor space with room for throwing and catching. Several plastic balls of different sizes/colors. Parent and child standing facing each other about 6-8 feet apart. Safe surface for potential falls.

How it works

  1. 1~45s

Start by letting your child choose their favorite ball from the options. Ask them what they likes about it — maybe the color, size, or design. Then stand facing each other and ask your child to throw the ball to you using an overhand motion. Watch how they throws — does they bring their arm back and follow through? Does they step forward with the opposite foot? Tell me what you notice about their throwing technique.

Watch for: Child uses coordinated overhand throwing motion with arm back, forward swing, and follow-through.

  2. 2~60s

Now let's practice catching. When your child throws the ball to you, catch it and then bounce it back to them so it arrives at chest level. Watch how your child prepares to catch — does they get their hands ready? Does they track the ball with their eyes and successfully catch it after the bounce? Try this back-and-forth a few times and tell me what you observe.

Watch for: Child successfully catches a ball that has bounced once, using hands to secure it.

  3. 3~50s

Now let's add some movement. After your child catches the ball, ask them to take two small jumps backward before throwing it back to you. Watch their jumping technique — does they jump with both feet together? Does they maintain balance when landing? The backward jumping adds challenge to their coordination. What do you notice about their jumping movements?

Watch for: Child jumps backward with both feet together, maintaining balance and control.
