Here Comes the Ball

Parent and child practice throwing and catching a ball, focusing on overhand throwing technique and catching with hands. The agent coaches the parent to observe throwing mechanics, catching coordination, and persistence during physical play — building gross motor skills and hand-eye coordination.

What you'll need

Open space indoors or outdoors. Several balls of different sizes (preferably plastic). Parent and child standing facing each other with several feet between them.

How it works

  1. 1~45s

Start by letting your child choose their favorite ball from the options. Ask them what they likes about that ball — the color, size, or texture. Then stand facing each other and ask your child to throw the ball to you using both hands over their head. Watch their throwing technique — does they bring the ball back behind their head and then forward with both arms? Tell me what you notice about their throw.

Watch for: Child throws ball using overhand motion with both hands, bringing ball behind head before forward release.

  2. 2~40s

Now show your child how to catch. Throw the ball gently back to them and watch their catching attempt. Does your child try to catch with just their hands, or does they use their whole body? Notice if they keeps their eyes on the ball and positions their hands ready to receive it. What catching strategy do you see?

Watch for: Child catches larger ball using arms and body, maintaining balance throughout the catch.

  3. 3~50s

Let's try a bounce pass now. Gently bounce the ball to your child so it comes up to their hands. Watch closely — does your child track the ball's bounce and time their catch? Bounce catching requires predicting where the ball will be, not just where it is. Notice if they adjusts their hand position based on the bounce. What do you observe?

Watch for: Child successfully catches ball after one bounce, showing anticipation and timing.
