Catching Fun!

Parent and child play a ball-catching game to practice throwing and catching skills. The agent coaches the parent to observe the child's hand-eye coordination, throwing mechanics, and catching techniques — building gross motor skills and coordination through playful practice.

What you'll need

Open space indoors or outdoors. Two different balls (different sizes/textures). Parent and child standing facing each other, 6-8 feet apart. Safe area with no breakables nearby.

How it works

  1. 1~45s

Let's start with the big soft ball. Stand a few feet away from your child and gently toss the ball underhand toward their hands. Watch closely — does your child catch it using just their hands, or does they use their body or arms to trap it? Even if they doesn't catch it perfectly, notice how they positions their hands. Tell me what you see.

Watch for: Child catches ball in the air using only hands, without trapping against body.

  2. 2~40s

Now let's switch roles — have your child throw the ball back to you. Ask them to throw it over their head using both hands. Watch their throwing mechanics — does they shift their weight forward? Does they use a full arm motion? Even if the throw isn't accurate, we're looking at the body mechanics. What do you notice?

Watch for: Child throws ball over head using both hands with coordinated body movement.

  3. 3~50s

Let's make it more fun! Grab the other ball — the different one. Ask your child what's different about this ball. Then try a bounce pass — bounce the ball once so it comes up to their hands. Watch how your child adjusts to the bounce. Does they time the catch differently? You could even sing a bit of a favorite song while playing to keep it light. What do you observe?

Watch for: Child catches ball after one bounce, adjusting timing and hand position.
