Free Coloring Exploration

Parent provides paper and crayons for child to engage in free-form scribbling and coloring. The agent coaches the parent to observe the child's grip, wrist movement, line direction, and overall fine motor control — building foundational skills for writing and artistic expression.

What you'll need

Child seated at a table or on the floor with paper secured (tape it down if needed). Provide 2-3 crayons or markers. Parent should sit nearby to observe and model. Ensure good lighting.

How it works

  1. 1~45s

Start by offering your child a crayon and see how they holds it. Does they use a full fist grip or more of a finger grasp? Then, watch as your child begins to make marks on the paper. Pay attention to their wrist — is they moving just their wrist, or is they using their whole arm? Tell me what you notice about your child's grip and movement style.

Watch for: Child demonstrates isolated wrist movement while scribbling, rather than moving the entire arm from the shoulder.

  2. 2~50s

Now, let's focus on the types of marks your child is making. Take a crayon yourself and make a few vertical lines on your paper — up-and-down strokes. Say 'Look, I'm going up and down!' as you do it. Then watch your child. Does they try to imitate you or make similar up-and-down strokes on their own? Even if they're not perfectly straight, we're looking for that vertical direction. What do you see?

Watch for: Child attempts to draw vertical lines (up-and-down strokes) either through imitation or spontaneously during free coloring.

  3. 3~60s

Let's step back and watch your child color freely for a moment. Don't give any new instructions. Just observe what emerges naturally. Besides any vertical lines, do you see your child making horizontal strokes (side-to-side), circular motions, or maybe even trying to combine marks? We're looking for the variety and spontaneity in their scribbling. Describe what you see your child creating on the paper.

Watch for: Child draws horizontal lines (side-to-side strokes) during free coloring, either spontaneously or after observation.
