Shape Bus Drawing

Parent guides child in drawing and cutting out a bus made from shapes (square and circles) to stimulate fine motor control, shape copying, and pre-writing skills. The agent coaches the parent to observe the child's ability to draw shapes independently, use scissors with control, and engage in collaborative creative play.

What you'll need

Table or flat workspace with cardstock paper, crayons, and child-safe scissors. Parent and child seated comfortably side-by-side or facing each other. Ensure adequate lighting.

How it works

  1. 1~45s

Start by telling your child we're going to make a bus out of shapes. Ask them to draw a big square on the paper to be the bus body. You can say, 'Can you draw a big square for our bus?' Watch how your child approaches this. Does they draw the square confidently without looking at an example? Notice the pencil grip and how they forms the four sides and corners. Tell me what you observe.

Watch for: Child draws a recognizable square shape independently without needing a visual example or tracing.

  2. 2~60s

Now tell your child our bus needs wheels! Ask them to draw four circles for wheels. You might say 'Can you draw four round circles for the wheels?' Watch how your child draws these circles. Are they round and closed? Does they draw them without looking at an example? Then, invite your child to color the circles together. Notice their coloring control — does they stay within the lines?

Watch for: Child draws recognizable circle shapes independently without a visual model.

  3. 3~50s

Now let's cut out our shape bus! Help your child hold the scissors safely and cut out the big square bus body. Watch their scissor skills — does they hold them correctly? Can they cut along the lines with some control? After cutting, you can play with the bus together. Maybe make 'vroom' sounds or pretend to drive it. Notice how your child engages in this collaborative creative play. Does they add ideas or follow your lead?

Watch for: Child demonstrates basic scissor control by cutting along straight lines with assistance.
