What you'll need

Child seated at table or on floor with workspace. Materials needed: cardstock paper, crayons, masking tape (pre-cut into small strips), optional stickers. Ensure child can reach all materials comfortably.

How it works

  1. 1~45s

Start by inviting your child to choose a favorite crayon. Encourage them to make circular strokes on the paper — you can demonstrate by drawing a big circle yourself. Watch how your child holds the crayon and moves their hand. Does they make rounded, continuous motions, or more choppy lines? Notice the wrist and finger movements. Tell me what you observe about their drawing technique.

Watch for: Child draws circular or rounded shapes using continuous, controlled motions with crayon.

  2. 2~50s

Now bring out the masking tape. Offer your child some pre-cut strips and encourage them to stick them onto the paper. Watch how your child handles the tape — does they use fingertips to peel and place it? Notice the precision of placement and how they manages the sticky surface. Does your child press it down firmly or just drop it on? Tell me about their tape application technique.

Watch for: Child successfully applies tape to paper with intentional placement and pressure.

  3. 3~60s

Now invite your child to take another crayon and color over the entire sheet, including the taped areas. Watch how your child navigates around and over the tape. Does they adjust pressure when coloring over raised surfaces? Notice how their fingers manage the crayon during this more complex task — switching colors, filling spaces, working around obstacles. You can also ask about colors to engage language skills. What do you observe about your child's integrated approach?

Watch for: Child demonstrates coordinated finger movements while managing multiple art materials and tasks.
