What you'll need

Table or floor space with paper and crayons available. Include orange and yellow crayons. Child should be seated comfortably with good lighting. Parent should have paper and crayon ready to demonstrate.

How it works

  1. 1~45s

Start by drawing a circle on your paper. Make it nice and round, about the size of your palm. Show your child how you do it — start at the top and go all the way around. Now ask your child to copy your circle on their own paper. Watch closely as they tries. Does your child understand the circular motion? Does they attempt to close the shape? Tell me what you notice about their attempt.

Watch for: Child attempts to copy a drawn circle without tracing, showing understanding of circular shape formation.

  2. 2~40s

Now let's focus on how your child holds the crayon. Watch their hand position as they draws another circle or colors. Is your child using a tripod grip — with the crayon resting between thumb and index finger, supported by the middle finger? Or is they using a fist grip or another hold? Notice if your child adjusts the grip naturally or if they seems to struggle with control.

Watch for: Child holds writing utensil with developing tripod grip or age-appropriate alternative, showing emerging writing posture.

  3. 3~50s

Now let's make our circles into sunshine! Ask your child to color the circle yellow, like the sun. Then add orange rays coming out from the circle. Watch how your child approaches coloring — does they try to stay within the lines of the circle? Does they use controlled strokes or scribble randomly? Notice if your child shows planning in their coloring approach.

Watch for: Child attempts to color within a drawn shape, showing developing fine motor control and spatial awareness.
