Walk Like an Elephant

Parent and child pretend to be elephants by walking on all fours with hips held high, strengthening upper and lower body muscles while practicing balance. The agent coaches the parent to observe the child's core stability, weight shifting, and coordination during this imaginative gross motor play.

What you'll need

Clear floor space large enough for parent and child to move on all fours. Comfortable clothing that allows movement. No materials needed.

How it works

  1. 1~20s

First, help your child get into elephant position. Show them how to place hands and feet on the floor with hips held high, like an elephant's big round back. Get into the position yourself too! Watch how your child holds this position. Does they keep their back fairly straight and stable, or does they wobble or sag in the middle? Tell me what you notice about their core strength in this starting pose.

Watch for: Child demonstrates core and upper body strength needed for climbing by maintaining stable elephant position with hips high.

  2. 2~40s

Now show your child how elephants walk! Bend one knee while keeping the opposite hand planted, then switch. Take five big, slow elephant steps together. Watch how your child coordinates their limbs - does they move opposite hand and foot together naturally? Notice if they maintains balance during the weight shift or if they wobbles when lifting a hand or foot. What do you see in their coordination?

Watch for: Child maintains balance while shifting weight during elephant walking, showing coordination and dynamic stability.

  3. 3~30s

Let's add an elephant challenge! After your five steps, freeze in elephant position. Now, can your child lift one hand like an elephant raising its trunk? Watch carefully - when they lifts that hand, does they need to shift weight or adjust their stance to stay balanced? This single-limb balance is similar to standing on one foot. What happens when your child tries this elephant trunk raise?

Watch for: Child demonstrates balance skills that transfer to one-foot standing by maintaining stability while lifting one limb in elephant position.
