Word Step Staircase
Parent places word cards on staircase steps and guides child to walk down while pronouncing each word. The agent coaches the parent to observe stair descent coordination, alternating foot patterns, and independent walking confidence — building gross motor skills and language integration through physical challenge.

What you'll need
Safe indoor or outdoor staircase with 5+ steps. Word cards placed one per step (gift, goat, gem, gate, ghost). Stairs should be clear of obstacles, well-lit, with secure handrail available. Child wearing secure, non-slip footwear.
How it works
- 1~45s
Start at the top of the stairs with your child. Walk down beside them without holding hands — just be close for safety. Encourage your child to walk down independently, stepping on each word card. Watch their foot pattern closely. Is your child alternating feet naturally — right foot on one step, left foot on the next? Or is they stepping with the same foot leading each time? Tell me what you notice about their coordination.
Watch for: Child walks down stairs using alternating foot pattern without holding support.
- 2~50s
Now let's add the word component. Ask your child to pronounce each word as they steps on the card. Watch how they manages this dual task — walking carefully while also focusing on language. Does saying the words help their rhythm or disrupt their coordination? Notice if your child maintains heel-to-toe motion while engaging cognitively with the words.
Watch for: Child demonstrates heel-to-toe walking pattern during stair descent while managing cognitive task.
- 3~40s
Now let's try going back up! Have your child walk up the stairs independently, perhaps collecting the word cards as they goes. Stair ascent requires different muscles and coordination. Watch closely — does your child use the same alternating pattern going up? Does they need to hold the rail or can they manage without support? Notice their confidence level compared to the descent.
Watch for: Child walks up stairs using alternating foot pattern without holding on for support.
