Babinski Reflex Discovery
Parent strokes the sole of baby's foot to observe the Babinski reflex — toes fanning outward when the foot is stimulated. The agent coaches the parent to understand newborn reflexes as indicators of a healthy nervous system, while also observing tactile responsiveness.

What you'll need
Baby lying on back, alert or calm. Bare feet accessible. No socks or footwear. Parent's hands clean.
How it works
- 1~20s
Take your thumb or finger and gently stroke the sole of your child's foot — start at the heel and slowly move up toward the toes. Do it firmly enough that it's not ticklish, but gently. Watch your child's toes closely. Do they fan outward and spread apart? That spreading is the Babinski reflex, and it's a beautiful sign of a healthy nervous system. Tell me what you see!
Watch for: Baby fans toes outward when sole of foot is stroked from heel to toes — the Babinski reflex.
- 2~25s
Now let's explore your child's overall touch response. Gently stroke the top of their foot, then their ankle, and then their calf. Watch your child's face and body — does they respond positively to your touch? You might see a smile, a relaxed expression, or they might wiggle with pleasure. How does your child react to being touched?
Watch for: Baby responds positively to gentle touch on feet and legs — showing facial or body reactions.
- 3~20s
One more thing — let's see if your child has any awareness of their own feet. Gently hold one of their feet and bring it slightly into their line of sight. Does your child look at their foot? Does they seem curious about it? At this young age, babies don't know those feet belong to them yet — but noticing them is the beginning of that discovery!
Watch for: Baby shows visual interest in own foot when it is brought into view.
