What you'll need

This helps imitate facial expressions.

How it works

  1. 1~30s

Alright, let's get started! To complete this activity, start by sitting in front of your child. you, watch your child closely — I'd love to hear what you notice about how they responds.

Watch for: Little One move a body part when asked to.

  2. 2~30s

Great, now let's try the next part. Tell him or her to watch your face carefully, and show your toddler how to move his tongue and mouth. Tell me what your child does — any reaction counts!

Watch for: Little One imitate what friends do in play, such as building towers when they do.

  3. 3~30s

One more thing to try. Now, ask him or her to try to imitate you, making the same movements. You can have a lot of fun making funny faces and taking turns imitating each other. During this exercise, observe if your toddler imitates your mouth movements intentionally and moves his or her mouth and face when prompted. How does your child handle this? What do you see?

Watch for: Little One copy what caregivers do, like taking a toy phone from a purse and saying 'hello.'.
