Side-Lying Position

Parent gently lifts baby from a side-lying position to strengthen back muscles and build body position awareness. The agent coaches the parent to observe baby's postural tone, curled-up posture, and hand clenching — early indicators of healthy nervous system development and muscle control.

What you'll need

Baby lying on side on a soft mat or blanket. Room comfortable. Parent ready to support baby's legs and neck gently.

How it works

  1. 1~20s

Before we start the lifting, let's observe your child's natural posture on their side. Does they stay curled up with arms and knees tucked close to their body? This curled-up position is a healthy newborn posture — it's called flexion, and it shows good muscle tone. Tell me how your child is positioned.

Watch for: Baby maintains a curled, flexed posture with arms and knees close to body when lying on side.

  2. 2~25s

Now place one hand gently under your child's neck and the other under their legs. Very slowly and gently, lift them just an inch or two off the mat. Hold for a moment, then lower them back down. Watch your child's body — does they try to keep that curled position, or does their body go limp? Does they seem to make any effort to hold their head? Tell me what you see.

Watch for: Baby shows muscle engagement and back strength when gently lifted from side-lying position.

  3. 3~25s

Now let's turn your child to their other side and do the same thing — one gentle lift. While they is on this side, also take a look at their hands. Are they clenched in fists? Can you gently touch their palm and see if the fingers open and close? The grasp reflex is perfectly normal at this age and shows healthy nerve connections.

Watch for: Baby holds fists clenched and shows grasp reflex when palm is stimulated.
