Color Race

Parent and child create colorful footprints by running through paint on paper outdoors, encouraging running on different surfaces and developing directional control. The agent coaches the parent to observe running confidence, surface adaptation, and directional awareness while engaging in playful physical activity.

What you'll need

Outdoor space with different surfaces available (grass, concrete, patio). Cardstock or large paper taped to ground. Paper plates with different colored washable paint. Child should be barefoot or in socks that can get paint on them. Parent should also be prepared to participate barefoot.

How it works

  1. 1~30s

Let's start with one color. Help your child step their feet gently into the paint on the plate. Now, show them how to run a few steps on the paper — make it playful and fun! Watch how your child approaches this. Does they run confidently onto the paper, or does they hesitate? Notice their balance and how they lifts their feet. Tell me what you observe about their running confidence.

Watch for: Child runs with confidence and stability when transitioning from ground to paper surface.

  2. 2~40s

Now let's add some direction! Place another paper a short distance away. Say 'Let's run to the blue paper!' or create a simple path with your colorful footprints. Watch how your child manages directional running. Does they run in a relatively straight line toward the target? Can they stop at the destination without falling? Notice if they adjusts their path mid-run.

Watch for: Child runs with intentional direction toward a target, adjusting path as needed and stopping with control.

  3. 3~45s

Now let's try different surfaces! If you have access to both grass and concrete, try running on each. Or compare the painted paper to bare ground. Watch closely how your child adapts their running. Does they change their stride on grass versus harder surfaces? Does they show more confidence on one surface? Notice their foot placement and balance adjustments.

Watch for: Child adapts running technique to different surfaces, showing awareness of texture and stability changes.
