Independent Play Exploration
Parent sets up a safe play space with simple toys and observes how baby engages in independent play. The agent coaches the parent to notice signs of independent exploration, emotional responses to play interruption, and early self-regulation skills — building foundational independence and curiosity.

What you'll need
Clear floor space free of hazards. Parent sits nearby but not directly engaged. 2-3 lightweight, unbreakable toys within baby's reach. Baby should be alert and in a calm mood.
How it works
- 1~45s
Start by placing the toys near your child and showing them how they work — you might drop one gently to demonstrate the sound it makes. Then sit back and observe. Watch how your child begins to explore the toys without your direct involvement. Does they reach for them independently? Does they seem curious and engaged in figuring them out on their own? Tell me what you notice about their independent exploration.
Watch for: Baby engages with toys independently, showing curiosity and self-directed exploration without requiring constant parent interaction.
- 2~30s
Now let's observe how your child responds to a gentle interruption. Wait until they is engaged with a toy, then calmly reach over and briefly take it away — just for 2-3 seconds — then immediately return it. Watch your child's emotional response. Does they protest or get upset? Does they quickly return to play once the toy is back? This helps us understand their emotional regulation during play disruptions.
Watch for: Baby shows emotional response to play interruption — may protest, show frustration, or quickly recover when play resumes.
- 3~60s
Let's watch how your child manages their own play experience. Observe for the next minute as they plays independently. Notice if your child shows any self-regulation — like taking a break when frustrated, trying different approaches with a toy, or calming themself after a minor challenge. Does they show persistence when something doesn't work immediately? These are early signs of self-regulation during independent activity.
Watch for: Baby shows early self-regulation during independent play — manages frustration, persists through challenges, or calms self after minor setbacks.
