Kick a Can

Parent sets up a simple kicking target using recycled cans and encourages child to practice kicking a ball toward them. The agent coaches the parent to observe kicking coordination, balance while standing, and hand-object manipulation skills — building gross motor development through playful physical activity.

What you'll need

Open floor space clear of obstacles. Soft ball (size of a soccer ball or smaller). 3-5 empty cans or lightweight plastic containers. Space should allow child to take several steps while kicking.

How it works

  1. 1~45s

Let's start by involving your child in setting up. Give them two cans to hold — one in each hand if possible, or both in one hand. Ask them to help you place them on the floor to make a little line or cluster. Watch how your child handles the cans — does they hold both at once? Can they carry them while walking to the spot? Tell me what you notice about their grip and coordination.

Watch for: Child holds two cans simultaneously, either one in each hand or both in one hand, while walking or standing.

  2. 2~50s

Now place the ball a few steps away from the cans. Show your child how to kick — you might give a gentle demonstration. Then encourage them to try. Watch their whole body: Does your child stand on one foot while kicking? Does they make contact with the ball? Notice the coordination between standing balance and leg movement. What do you see?

Watch for: Child attempts to kick ball while standing, making contact and showing coordinated leg movement.

  3. 3~60s

Let's make it a game! Encourage your child to try knocking down a can. You might say 'Can you hit the blue one?' or 'Let's see if we can knock it over!' Watch how your child adjusts their approach: Does they look at the target, then at the ball? Does they try multiple kicks? Notice any problem-solving — like moving closer or changing foot position. What strategies do you see?

Watch for: Child shows purposeful kicking with attention to target, adjusting approach based on results.
