Family Box Run

Parent sets up family photos around a room and invites child to run to collect them, then return them to a box. The agent coaches the parent to observe directional running, speed control, and purposeful movement — building gross motor coordination and spatial awareness through a fun, meaningful game.

What you'll need

Clear space for running. Family photos taped around room at child's eye level, spaced apart. Box or container placed in center of room. Child wearing comfortable clothes and shoes suitable for running.

How it works

  1. 1~30s

Let's begin! Point to the first photo and say, 'your child, let's go get Grandma!' or whoever is in that picture. Encourage them to run to that specific photo. Watch how your child moves — does they run directly toward the photo you indicated, or does they wander or change direction along the way? Tell me what you notice about their ability to run toward a target.

Watch for: Child runs purposefully toward a specific target (family photo) with clear directional intent.

  2. 2~35s

Now let's try a photo that's farther away. Point to one across the room and say, 'Quick, let's get Uncle Mike!' Use an excited voice to encourage faster movement. Watch your child's speed — does they start slow and then pick up pace? Can they control their speed enough to stop safely at the photo? Notice if they seems steady or wobbly when running faster.

Watch for: Child modulates running speed — accelerates for distance and decelerates to stop — showing emerging control.

  3. 3~45s

Now let's make it a sequence. Ask your child to collect two or three photos and bring them back to the box. Say, 'First get Grandpa, then get the baby picture, and put them in our box!' Observe if your child remembers the sequence while running — does they go to the correct photos in order? Does they understand the purpose of returning them to the box? Watch how their running integrates with this multi-step task.

Watch for: Child coordinates running with a cognitive task — remembering targets and sequence — showing integrated purposeful movement.
