Family Pictures

Parent looks at family photos with child, encouraging conversation about family members and shared experiences. The agent coaches the parent to observe word repetition, two-word phrases, specific requests, and single-word idea communication — building language production and family connection.

What you'll need

Parent and child sitting comfortably together with family photo album or printed photos. Space should be quiet and free from distractions. Photos should be accessible and visible to child.

How it works

  1. 1~30s

Start by opening the album to a clear picture of a family member your child knows well — maybe you, you, or another close relative. Point to the person and say their name clearly: 'Look, that's Grandma!' Then pause and watch your child's response. Does they try to repeat the name after you? Even an approximation like 'Gamma' counts. Tell me what you hear.

Watch for: Child attempts to repeat words or names heard in conversation, showing auditory processing and imitation.

  2. 2~40s

Now turn to a picture that shows an action or activity — maybe someone eating, playing, or hugging. Describe what you see using simple language: 'Daddy is eating' or 'Sister is playing.' Then ask your child a question about the picture: 'What is Daddy doing?' Watch to see if your child puts two words together in response. Even 'Daddy eat' or 'play ball' counts as a phrase. What does they say?

Watch for: Child combines two words to form a brief phrase, showing emerging syntax and idea combination.

  3. 3~45s

Let's look at a few more pictures together. As you turn pages, notice if your child asks for specific photos by name — like 'More Grandma' or 'See doggie.' Also listen for single words that communicate bigger ideas. If your child points to a park picture and says 'park,' they might mean 'I want to go to the park' or 'We played at the park.' Watch for both specific requests and those one-word big ideas. What do you notice?

Watch for: Child asks for specific items or people by name, showing intentional communication and vocabulary use.
