What you'll need

Parent and child sitting together at a table or on the floor. Have paper, dry pasta, and a pepper visible. Ensure child is alert and engaged. No other distractions.

How it works

  1. 1~30s

Start by showing your child the paper. Hold it up and say 'paper' clearly, emphasizing the 'P' sound at the beginning. Then invite your child to touch it. Ask, 'Can you say paper?' Watch closely — does your child attempt to say the word? Listen for any approximation of the 'P' sound, even if it's not perfect. Tell me what you hear.

Watch for: Child attempts to produce the 'P' sound in target words like 'paper', 'pasta', or 'pepper'.

  2. 2~40s

Now bring out the pasta and pepper. Place all three items in front of your child. Point to each and say its name: 'paper, pasta, pepper.' Then ask, 'Where's the pasta?' or 'Can you show me the pepper?' Watch to see if your child can identify them correctly. This shows their understanding of these everyday words. Does they point to or pick up the right item?

Watch for: Child demonstrates understanding of multiple target words by correctly identifying objects when named.

  3. 3~35s

Now let's encourage your child to use the words. Hold up the pepper and say, 'We eat pepper with our lunch. Can you say pepper?' Then try a simple sentence like 'Pass the pasta, please!' emphasizing the 'P' words. Listen for whether your child repeats any of the words or phrases spontaneously. Does they try to say 'pass' or 'pasta'? Even an attempt counts!

Watch for: Child repeats words or short phrases overheard in the conversation, showing active language processing.
