Letter P Hunt and Color

Parent hides drawings of P-words (pig, pie, plant) for child to find, then colors together while emphasizing the 'P' sound. The agent coaches the parent to observe emerging pronunciation attempts, spontaneous scribbling, and word-object association — building early literacy and fine motor skills through playful discovery.

What you'll need

Three drawings (pig, pie, plant) and crayons ready. Room with space to hide pictures at child's eye level (under cushions, behind chairs, etc.). Child should be alert and playful.

How it works

  1. 1~30s

Let's start by hiding the pictures around the room — just a few easy spots where your child can discover them. Now, take your child by the hand and say, 'Let's find the pig!' When you discover the first picture, hold it up and say 'PIG' with a big, clear 'P' sound — 'P-p-p-ig!' Encourage your child to point to it or try to say the word. Watch their mouth and expression closely. Does your child attempt to repeat the 'P' sound or the whole word? Tell me what you notice.

Watch for: Child attempts to pronounce the 'P' sound or a P-word like 'pig', 'pie', or 'plant' after hearing parent's emphasis.

  2. 2~40s

Now let's find the next picture — maybe the pie or plant. As you hunt, use phrases like 'Let's go find the PIE' or 'Where's the PLANT?' Keep emphasizing that 'P'. When you find it, name it again and see if your child tries to say it. Also, watch for any 'M' sounds — if your child says 'mommy' or 'more' during the hunt, that's another important sound we're observing. Tell me what words or sounds you hear.

Watch for: Child uses words with the 'M' sound (like 'mommy', 'more', 'me') spontaneously during the activity.

  3. 3~45s

Now that you've found all the pictures, sit together with the crayons. Let your child scribble freely on the drawings — any marks, any colors. As they scribbles, talk about the pictures: 'You're coloring the PIG! What does the pig say?' or 'Look at your PIE drawing!' Watch how your child engages. Does they make spontaneous scribbling motions? Does they seem to connect your words with the picture they's marking? Tell me what you observe.

Watch for: Child makes spontaneous scribbling marks on paper with crayon, showing emerging fine motor control and intentional marking.
