Run and Throw!

Parent engages toddler in a running and throwing game, encouraging movement across different surfaces and practicing overhand throwing. The agent coaches the parent to observe running confidence, directional control, and throwing coordination — building gross motor skills and physical confidence.

What you'll need

Open space with at least two different surface types (e.g., grass and pavement, carpet and tile). Soft ball appropriate for toddler hands. Parent should be prepared to run alongside child. Outdoor or large indoor space recommended.

How it works

  1. 1~30s

Let's start with just running. Take your child to the first surface — maybe the grass or carpet. Say 'Ready, set, go!' and run together for about 10 feet. Watch how your child moves. Does they run with confidence, lifting their feet and maintaining balance? Or does they take cautious, shuffling steps? Notice their comfort level on this surface.

Watch for: Toddler runs with confidence on different surfaces, adjusting stride and maintaining balance.

  2. 2~35s

Now let's add some direction. Move to a second surface — maybe pavement or a hard floor. This time, run toward a specific target together, like a tree, a wall, or a marked spot. Say 'Let's run to the tree!' Watch if your child can run in that direction without veering off course. Does they look toward the target while running? Can they stop when they reaches it?

Watch for: Toddler runs with directional control toward a specific target, maintaining course and stopping appropriately.

  3. 3~40s

Now for the throwing part! Take out the ball and show your child how to throw overhand — arm back, then forward over your shoulder. Have your child practice throwing from a standing position first. Then combine it with running: have them run a few steps, stop, and throw the ball. Watch their throwing form. Does they bring their arm back and release overhand? How far does the ball go?

Watch for: Toddler throws ball overhand with coordination, achieving distance of approximately 10 feet (3 meters).
