Bead Maze Play

Parent introduces a bead maze toy to their toddler, demonstrating how to grasp and slide beads along the wires. The agent coaches the parent to observe hand coordination, bilateral skills, and problem-solving approaches — building fine motor control and cognitive flexibility through playful manipulation.

What you'll need

Parent and child seated comfortably together, bead maze or similar manipulative toy within easy reach. Surface should be stable. Good lighting so child can see colors and shapes.

How it works

  1. 1~30s

Start by showing your child the bead maze. Point to one bead and say, 'Look at this blue one!' Then slowly demonstrate how to grasp it with your whole hand and slide it along the wire from one end to the other. Now invite your child to try. Watch how they grabs the bead — does they use a raking motion with all fingers, or a more precise grip? Tell me what you notice about their grasp.

Watch for: Child uses a raking grasp (fingers together, palm involvement) to secure and manipulate the bead along the wire.

  2. 2~40s

Now encourage your child to explore the maze more freely. See if they holds onto one bead with one hand while using the other hand to slide a different bead. Or maybe they tries to hold two beads in one hand at the same time. Watch for any coordination between their hands — does one hand stabilize the toy while the other manipulates?

Watch for: Child uses both hands together in a complementary way — one hand may hold or steady while the other manipulates.

  3. 3~35s

Let's introduce a little challenge. If you have a small stick or a toddler-safe tool (like a spoon or a block), offer it to your child and see if they tries to use it to push or move a bead along the wire. You can demonstrate first — 'Watch, I can push the bead with this stick!' Observe whether your child understands the idea of using one object to affect another.

Watch for: Child attempts to use an object (stick, block, etc.) as a tool to manipulate the bead on the maze.
