Dancing Suns

Parent and child create simple yarn pom-poms and dance together to music, observing hand coordination, bilateral skills, and rhythmic movement. The agent coaches the parent to notice how the child holds and manipulates objects while moving, builds fine motor control through craft preparation, and develops musical expression through dance.

What you'll need

Clear workspace for crafting. Have fork, yellow yarn, scissors ready. Prepare music player with 'Oh Mr. Sun' or similar upbeat song. Ensure safe dancing area free of obstacles.

How it works

  1. 1~45s

Let's start by making our dancing suns together. Show your child how to wrap the yellow yarn around the fork. Can they help hold the yarn while you wrap? Notice how your child holds the yarn — does they use one hand or both? Can they maintain a grip while you pull it gently? This simple wrapping action is great for building hand strength and coordination. Tell me what you notice about their grasp.

Watch for: Child holds yarn with one hand while parent wraps, or attempts to hold both yarn and fork simultaneously, showing emerging hand capacity.

  2. 2~40s

Now let's finish our pom-poms. Thread a piece of yarn through the center of the wrapped yarn and tie a knot — you can have your child hold one end while you tie. Then carefully pull the yarn off the fork and cut the loops to create the fluffy pom-pom. Watch how your child handles the finished pom-pom — does they hold one in each hand? Can they shake them, transfer them between hands, or squeeze them? Notice any bilateral coordination as they explores this new object.

Watch for: Child uses both hands together in coordinated manner — holding pom-poms in each hand, transferring between hands, or manipulating with two-handed action.

  3. 3~50s

Now for the dancing suns! Play 'Oh Mr. Sun' or another cheerful song. Show your child how to hold the pom-poms and dance — raise your arms, shake the pom-poms, move to the rhythm. Watch how your child moves with the music while holding the pom-poms. Does they maintain grip while dancing? Can they follow simple movements like raising arms or shaking in time with the beat? Notice how their gross motor movement integrates with their fine motor control of the objects.

Watch for: Child moves body rhythmically to music while maintaining hold on objects, showing integration of gross and fine motor control.
