Going Back!

Parent guides child in walking backward games, observing balance, coordination, and spatial awareness. The agent coaches the parent to notice how the child manages backward movement, navigates narrow spaces, and maintains stability while carrying objects — building gross motor skills and body control.

What you'll need

Clear, flat space for walking (carpet or hard floor). Optional: two plastic cups and small amount of water. Parent should be positioned to support child if needed.

How it works

  1. 1~30s

Start by facing your child and holding their hands. Say 'Let's walk backward together!' and take a few slow steps back, encouraging your child to follow. Watch how your child moves — does they lift their feet confidently or shuffle? Does they look over their shoulder or trust you to guide them? Tell me what you notice about those first backward steps.

Watch for: Child walks backward with some coordination, lifting feet and maintaining balance with minimal support.

  2. 2~35s

Now let's create a 'narrow path' using two lines on the floor — you can use tape, string, or just imagine them about 12 inches apart. Encourage your child to walk backward down this narrow path while you hold their hands. Watch how they adjusts — does your child stay within the lines? Does they widen their stance or cross feet? Notice the strategies they uses to stay balanced in a confined space.

Watch for: Child navigates a narrow space while walking backward, showing adjusted balance and foot placement.

  3. 3~40s

Let's add a fun challenge! If you have cups and water, give your child a plastic cup with a tiny bit of water (or an empty cup if you prefer). Ask them to walk backward while holding the cup. Watch how your child manages — does they focus on the cup or their feet? Does they slow down or adjust their grip? This mimics stair climbing where they must coordinate movement while managing an object or alternating feet.

Watch for: Child coordinates backward walking with an additional task (holding object), showing integrated motor planning.
