Roll and Reach

Parent places baby on tummy and uses toys to encourage rolling and reaching movements. The agent coaches the parent to observe baby's rolling transitions, tummy-time mobility, and problem-solving when toys are placed just out of reach — building core strength and motor planning for future skills.

What you'll need

Baby positioned on tummy on a soft, padded surface. Two small, attractive toys within parent's reach. Parent positioned to baby's side where baby can see both parent and toys. Room should be clear of hazards for rolling.

How it works

  1. 1~30s

Take one toy and show it to your child from the side — hold it just above eye level, about a foot away. Gently wiggle it and say something like 'Look at this!' Watch to see if your child tries to roll toward the toy. You might see them shift their weight, lift an arm, or begin to turn their body. Tell me what movement you notice.

Watch for: Baby initiates rolling movement from tummy to back or side when motivated by a toy.

  2. 2~35s

Now let's try the other side. Gently help your child back to tummy position if needed. Show the toy from the opposite side — same height and distance. Watch to see if your child attempts to roll this direction too. Some babies have a preferred side, so we want to encourage both. Also notice if they uses their legs during the attempt — any pushing or scooting movements while on their tummy?

Watch for: Baby attempts rolling movements in both directions, showing balanced motor development.

  3. 3~45s

Now for a little challenge. Place one toy just out of your child's reach in front of them. Put the second toy even farther, creating a small 'obstacle course.' Watch how your child problem-solves. Does they try to reach over the first toy? Push it aside? Or maybe they attempts to transition toward sitting to get a better position? Notice the strategies they uses to get what they wants.

Watch for: Baby attempts to move from tummy toward sitting position during reaching efforts.
