Moro Reflex Discovery

Parent gently startles baby with a soft clap while baby is lying on back, observing the Moro reflex response. The agent coaches the parent to notice the characteristic arm extension, back arching, and subsequent arm return — verifying healthy nervous system function and early reflex patterns.

What you'll need

Baby lying on back on a soft, flat surface (blanket, mat, or bed). Baby should be awake, alert, and calm. Room should be quiet with minimal distractions. No materials needed.

How it works

  1. 1~20s

First, let's make sure your child is relaxed. Gently place your hands on their chest for a moment — feel their breathing. When they seems calm, make a soft but sudden clap with your hands about 12 inches from their head. Watch your child's face and body closely. Does they show any immediate reaction to the sound? You might see their eyes widen, their body tense, or a quick movement. Tell me what you notice first.

Watch for: Baby shows an immediate reaction to sudden auditory stimulus — eye widening, body tension, or initial movement.

  2. 2~15s

Now let's watch the full Moro reflex unfold. After that initial startle, you should see your child arch their back slightly, extend their arms out to the sides with palms facing up, and then quickly bring them back in toward their chest. It happens fast — like a little hug motion. Watch carefully: does your child show this arm extension and return? Does their back arch at all?

Watch for: Baby shows the characteristic Moro reflex pattern — back arching, arm extension with palms up, followed by arm return to chest.

  3. 3~25s

Let's focus on your child's hands during the reflex. As they extends their arms, watch their palms — do they open briefly with fingers spread? Newborns often keep their hands fisted, but during the Moro reflex, you might see a momentary hand opening. Also notice what happens after the reflex: does your child bring their hands together toward their chest or mouth?

Watch for: Baby opens hands briefly during Moro reflex arm extension, showing emerging hand control and fine motor development.
