Newborn Reflex Exploration

Parent gently stimulates baby's early reflexes through touch and movement, observing automatic responses that show healthy neurological development. The agent coaches the parent to notice leg extension, toe spreading, startle response, and rooting reflex — building understanding of newborn capabilities and strengthening muscles through natural movements.

What you'll need

Baby lying on back on a soft, flat surface. Room should be warm and comfortable. No materials needed — just parent's hands and gentle touch.

How it works

  1. 1~30s

Let's start with your child's legs. Gently hold your child upright, supporting their head and torso. Now let their feet touch the mat or your lap — just enough contact to feel the surface. Watch what happens. Does your child push against the surface with their legs? You might see their legs straighten or push down as if trying to stand. This is the leg extension reflex — it helps strengthen those leg muscles. Tell me what you notice.

Watch for: Baby extends legs and pushes against firm surface when feet make contact, showing leg extension reflex.

  2. 2~35s

Now let's lay your child on their back. Take one of their feet in your hand and gently stroke the sole from heel to toes, using your thumb. Watch your child's toes carefully. Do they spread out or curl? The Babinski reflex causes toes to fan out when the sole is stroked — it's a sign of healthy neurological development. Try it a few times and tell me what you see.

Watch for: Baby spreads toes when sole of foot is stroked, showing Babinski reflex.

  3. 3~45s

Let's explore two more reflexes. First, gently stroke your child's cheek near the corner of their mouth. Watch if they turns their head toward your hand and opens their mouth — that's the rooting reflex, which helps with feeding. Then, while your child is lying down, make a sudden but gentle movement nearby (like quickly moving your hand toward them face) and watch their reaction. Does they throw their arms out and then bring them back in? That's the Moro or startle reflex. Try both and tell me what you notice.

Watch for: Baby turns head toward cheek stroke and opens mouth, showing rooting reflex.
