Cars and Trails
Parent plays with toy cars or trains with child, creating trails around the room while using simple three-word phrases and requests. The agent coaches the parent to observe language comprehension, following simple instructions, and joint attention during play — building early vocabulary and interactive communication skills.

What you'll need
Clear floor space for playing with toy vehicles. 2-3 toy cars, trains, or trucks with wheels that roll easily. Parent and child sitting on floor facing each other with toys between them.
How it works
- 1~25s
Start by showing your child one of the vehicles. Use a simple three-word phrase like 'Look, a train!' or 'See the car!' Say it with excitement and point to the toy. Watch your child's eyes — does they look at the vehicle you're talking about? Does they seem to understand you're describing what they sees? Tell me what you notice about their response.
Watch for: Child shows comprehension of simple three-word phrases by looking at or reaching for the named object.
- 2~30s
Now let's try a simple request. Hold out your hand and say 'Give me the car' or 'Pass the train.' Use a clear, friendly tone. Watch how your child responds. Does they look at the toy, then at your hand? Does they attempt to pick it up or push it toward you? Even an attempt counts — we're looking for understanding of the request.
Watch for: Child responds to simple verbal request by attempting to give or pass the named object.
- 3~35s
Now let's make it interactive. Start rolling a car toward your child, then say 'Your turn!' and pause. See if your child rolls it back to you. Or create a little trail with the vehicles and point saying 'Look at our trail!' Watch for joint attention — does your child look where you're pointing, then back at you, sharing the experience? This back-and-forth is key for communication development.
Watch for: Child engages in joint attention during play — looking between object and parent, sharing focus on the same activity.
