Goal! Soccer Kick Practice

Parent sets up a simple goal with cushions and encourages their toddler to practice running and kicking a ball toward it. The agent coaches the parent to observe kicking coordination, dynamic movement integration, and persistence in physical play — building gross motor skills through joyful, goal-oriented activity.

What you'll need

Open space free of obstacles. Two cushions or pillows placed 3-4 feet apart to form a goal. Soft ball (foam, cloth, or lightweight plastic) nearby. Child wearing comfortable clothes and shoes or barefoot on safe surface.

How it works

  1. 1~30s

Let's start simple. Place the ball right in front of your child while they is standing. Show them how to kick it with one foot toward the goal. You might say 'Kick it, your child!' Watch closely — does your child make contact with the ball? Does they use a swinging leg motion or more of a stomping action? Tell me what you see.

Watch for: Child kicks a stationary ball while standing, using a coordinated leg swing rather than just pushing or stomping.

  2. 2~40s

Now let's add some movement. Place the ball a few steps away from the goal. Show your child how to run toward it and kick while moving. You might run together holding hands first. Watch how your child integrates the running and kicking — does they slow down to kick, or try to kick while maintaining speed? Does they alternate feet or prefer one?

Watch for: Child coordinates running toward a ball and kicking it without completely stopping, integrating locomotion and striking skills.

  3. 3~45s

Let's make it more dynamic. Gently roll the ball toward your child instead of having it stationary. Say 'Get the ball!' and see if your child can adjust their kick to a moving target. Also notice their persistence — after a miss, does they chase the ball and try again? Does they show enjoyment and want to keep playing?

Watch for: Child successfully kicks a gently rolling ball, adjusting timing and foot placement to moving target.
