Upright Head Turning Play

What you'll need

Parent holding baby upright with secure head and neck support. Two bright, colorful toys within reach — one for each side. Baby should be alert and calm. Room should be well-lit but not overly bright.

How it works

  1. 1~30s

Start by holding your child upright, supporting their head with one hand. Take a bright toy and hold it about 8-10 inches from their face, just to their left side. Gently wiggle the toy and see if your child turns their head toward it. Watch closely — even a small head movement in that direction counts! Tell me what you notice.

Watch for: Baby turns head toward a visual stimulus when held upright with support.

  2. 2~35s

Now let's check both sides. Hold your child upright again, supporting their head. Show the toy on the right side this time. After your child looks at it, slowly move the toy back to center. Watch their head as you do this — does your child keep their head upright and somewhat stable, or does it wobble or droop without your full support? Even brief moments of stability count!

Watch for: Baby maintains head position with minimal wobbling when held upright with partial support.

  3. 3~40s

Let's make it a game! Hold your child upright and take two toys — one in each hand. Show your child the toy on the left, then slowly move it across to the right side, about 12 inches away. Watch their eyes and head. Does your child follow the toy with their gaze? Does they attempt to turn their head to track it? We're looking for that connection between seeing and moving.

Watch for: Baby visually tracks a moving object while head is supported upright.
