Tummy Time Stretch

Parent positions baby on their chest for supported tummy time, gently stroking cheeks and arms to encourage stretching movements and early reflex responses. The agent coaches the parent to observe head turning toward touch, rooting reflex activation, and initial arm stretching — building neck strength, coordination, and sensory-motor integration.

What you'll need

Parent reclined comfortably (on bed, couch, or floor with back support). Baby positioned on parent's chest/stomach, facing parent. Room should be warm and calm. No materials needed, though a small cloth or towel can be used optionally.

How it works

  1. 1~25s

Start by getting comfortable with your child resting on your chest. Gently stroke their right cheek with your finger — use a soft, slow motion from cheekbone toward the corner of their mouth. Watch your child's head closely. Does they turn their head toward your touch? Even a slight movement toward your finger counts. Tell me what you notice.

Watch for: Baby turns head toward the side where cheek is stroked, showing sensory-motor response to touch.

  2. 2~30s

Now let's try the other cheek. Stroke your child's left cheek gently, this time moving from cheekbone toward their mouth. Watch their mouth closely. Does your child open their mouth or make sucking motions as you stroke? Does they turn toward your finger as if searching? This is the rooting reflex — an important early feeding reflex. What do you observe?

Watch for: Baby opens mouth and turns head toward cheek stroke, showing rooting reflex activation.

  3. 3~35s

Now let's encourage some stretching. While your child is still on your chest, gently stroke down their arms from shoulder to wrist. As you stroke, see if you can encourage your child to stretch their arms forward. You might say 'Reach for me!' or use a small cloth for them to grasp if you have one handy. Watch for any arm extension or reaching movement — even small stretches count. What do you see?

Watch for: Baby extends arms forward or upward while on tummy, showing early reaching/stretching movements.
