Smell Exploration Adventure
Parent introduces baby to various household objects with distinct smells, observing baby's sensory reactions and fine motor exploration. The agent coaches the parent to notice olfactory responses, pincer grasp development, and independent exploration behaviors — building sensory processing and fine motor skills through multi-sensory discovery.

What you'll need
Baby sitting comfortably on floor or in high chair. 3-4 safe smell objects within reach (lemon slice, fresh herb, scented cloth, mild soap). Objects should be large enough not to be choking hazards. Parent positioned nearby for supervision.
How it works
- 1~25s
Let's start with one object — maybe the lemon slice. Hold it about 6 inches from your child's nose so they can smell it without touching it yet. Watch their face closely. Does your child show any reaction? You might see them smile, wrinkle their nose, lean forward for another sniff, or even sneeze. Tell me what you notice in their expression.
Watch for: Baby shows differentiated response to smell — positive (smiling, leaning in) or negative (nose wrinkling, turning away, sneezing).
- 2~35s
Now place the lemon slice in front of your child and encourage them to pick it up. Watch how they grasps it. At this age, we often see babies starting to use their fingertips — what's called a pincer grasp — rather than their whole hand. Does your child use thumb and finger tips to pick it up? Or does they still use a palmar grasp with the whole hand?
Watch for: Baby uses thumb and fingertips to pick up small objects, demonstrating developing pincer grasp.
- 3~40s
Let's introduce a second smell object — maybe the fresh herb or scented cloth. Place it beside the lemon slice and watch what your child does. Does they look between the two objects? Pick up one, smell it, then reach for the other? We're looking for how they coordinates looking, reaching, and smelling — that's hand-eye coordination plus sensory integration. What do you observe?
Watch for: Baby coordinates visual attention with hand movements to explore multiple objects, showing integrated sensory-motor processing.
