Name Recognition Game

Parent calls baby's name from different positions while baby is playing, observing if baby turns or moves toward the sound. The agent coaches the parent to notice name recognition responses, self-awareness development, and social connection through verbal interaction — building early identity awareness and responsive communication.

What you'll need

Parent and baby on floor, baby in tummy time position facing parent. Have 2-3 engaging toys nearby. Ensure enough space for baby to turn or crawl toward parent. Room should be quiet enough for baby to hear name clearly.

How it works

  1. 1~25s

Start by playing with your child and the toys for a minute or two. Get them engaged and focused on the play. Now, while your child is looking at the toy, gently say their name in a warm, inviting tone — 'your child!' Watch closely. Does they pause their play? Does they look up or turn their head toward you? Even a slight head turn counts! Tell me what you notice.

Watch for: Baby shows recognition of own name by pausing activity, turning head, or moving toward parent when name is called.

  2. 2~35s

Now let's try from a different position. Slowly move to your child's side or slightly behind them while they is still engaged with the toy. Wait until they is focused on playing, then say their name again with that same warm tone. This time, watch for more deliberate movement. Does your child turn their whole body? Does they try to crawl or scoot toward you? The position change makes this more challenging and tells us about their spatial awareness too.

Watch for: Baby turns body or moves toward sound source when name is called from different positions.

  3. 3~30s

Let's connect this to self-awareness. If you have a mirror nearby, you could incorporate it, but let's focus on the social mirror of your response. When your child turns toward you after you say their name, respond with big smiles and excited praise — 'Yes! That's you, your child!' Watch how they reacts to this positive reinforcement. Does your child seem to understand that they did something special? Does their expression show pride or pleasure in the connection? We're looking for that spark of self-recognition through your joyful response.

Watch for: Baby shows signs of self-awareness through positive response to name recognition and social reinforcement.
