What you'll need

Play area with toys scattered on floor. Toy storage container or shelf within toddler's reach. Parent and child should be on floor level together. No specific materials needed beyond toys and storage.

How it works

  1. 1~30s

First, let's play with your child for a few minutes. Choose toys they enjoys — blocks, stuffed animals, or simple toys. After about 5 minutes of play, say 'Okay, it's clean up time!' in a cheerful voice. Hold out the toy container and say 'your child, can you help me put the toys away?' Watch how they responds to this invitation. Does they understand what you're asking?

Watch for: Toddler understands and responds to simple one-step instruction about cleaning up.

  2. 2~45s

Now let's see how your child participates. Continue cleaning up together — you pick up toys, and encourage your child to do the same. You might say 'You put the red block in, I'll put the blue one.' Watch your child's actions closely. Does they actually put toys in the container? Does they hand you toys to put away? How much initiative does they show in this shared task?

Watch for: Toddler actively participates in cleaning up toys, showing cooperation with caregiver in simple household task.

  3. 3~40s

Let's observe your child's independence. As you near the end of clean up, step back slightly and see if your child continues without your direct participation. You might say 'You finish putting those last toys away while I watch.' Notice if your child shows initiative — picking up remaining toys, putting them in the right place, or even starting to clean up without being asked. Does they show any pride or satisfaction in completing the task?

Watch for: Toddler shows initiative and independence in completing clean up task with minimal adult direction.
