Book Page Turning

Parent places small cereal pieces on book pages and encourages baby to pick them up and turn pages. The agent coaches the parent to observe baby's finger dexterity, pincer grasp development, and early book interaction skills — building fine motor control and hand-eye coordination.

What you'll need

Parent and baby seated comfortably facing each other. Small board book with thick pages. Tiny cereal pieces or soft finger foods (like O-shaped cereal). Book should be opened flat on floor or lap.

How it works

  1. 1~30s

Start by placing one cereal piece on the first page of the book, right in the center. Say something like 'Look your child, a little treasure!' Watch how your child approaches it. Does they use a raking motion with all their fingers, or try to pick it up with thumb and finger? Tell me what you see in their hand movements.

Watch for: Baby uses a raking motion with fingers to gather and pick up small objects from a flat surface.

  2. 2~35s

Now place another cereal piece on the next page, but this time make it more prominent — maybe near the edge where it's easier to grasp. Watch your child's fingers closely. Does they try to use thumb and index finger together? You might see them using what's called a 'crude pincer' — thumb and finger pads touching. Even an attempt counts!

Watch for: Baby attempts to pick up small objects using thumb and index finger in a pincer-like motion.

  3. 3~40s

Now let's work on page turning. After your child picks up the cereal, encourage them to help turn the page to find the next 'treasure.' You might say 'Let's see what's on the next page!' and gently guide their hand to the page corner. Watch how your child coordinates this — does they grasp the page? Use a sweeping motion? This combines fine motor skills with early book interaction.

Watch for: Baby successfully removes objects from a container or surface as part of a sequence of actions.
