What you'll need
Safe carpeted or padded stairs with 3-5 steps. Parent positioned below child for safety. Have 2-3 favorite toys ready. Ensure child is wearing comfortable clothing that allows movement.
How it works
- 1~30s
Let's start with crawling up. Take your child's favorite stuffed toy — maybe a bear or other animal — and place it on the second or third step. Say something like 'Let's follow the bear!' Watch how your child approaches the stairs. Does they get into crawling position confidently? Does they look at the toy and then at the stairs, planning how to reach it? Tell me what you notice about their initial approach.
Watch for: Toddler shows planning before climbing — looking between toy and stairs, adjusting body position, or demonstrating intentional approach.
- 2~45s
Now encourage your child to crawl up to the toy. Watch their crawling coordination carefully. Does they use alternating hands and knees? Does they maintain balance while lifting each limb? Pay special attention to how high they tries to go — some toddlers will climb just one step while others attempt several. What do you notice about their upward crawling technique?
Watch for: Toddler crawls up stairs using coordinated alternating limb movements, showing balance and strength.
- 3~50s
Now let's practice crawling down — often the trickier direction. Place the toy a few steps below where your child is. Help them turn around safely. Watch how your child approaches going downward. Does they understand to go feet first? Does they move in this new direction as confidently as upward? You might give simple instructions like 'Put your right leg down' and see if they follows them. What do you observe about their downward crawling?
Watch for: Toddler crawls down stairs feet first, showing understanding of safe downward movement and directional change.
