What you'll need

Encourage active word-use with baby.

How it works

  1. 1~30s

Alright, let's get started! Complete this activity while your baby and you are interacting with someone else. Ask your baby to request an object from the other person. Trying to choose an object that your baby really wants, like a snack or a special toy, so that she's inclined to ask for it. you, watch your child closely — I'd love to hear what you notice about how they responds.

Watch for: Little One say at least one word with meaning, like saying 'hi' or 'coo' for 'cookie.'.

  2. 2~30s

Great, now let's try the next part. Can I have a cookie? Can I have a cookie? Can I have a cookie, please? Tell me what your child does — any reaction counts!

Watch for: Little One try to copy the words you say.

  3. 3~30s

One more thing to try. Can I have a cookie? During this exercise, observe if your baby just digulates and vocalizes her wants and needs. And if she begins to associate objects with her corresponding names. How does your child handle this? What do you see?

Watch for: Little One imitate a sound like 'pa' after you say it.
