Exploring Textures

Parent lets baby touch food or different textured materials during mealtime or free play. The agent guides the parent to observe how baby grasps, explores, and reacts to various textures — building tactile discrimination, hand transfer skills, and sensory curiosity.

What you'll need

Baby seated in a highchair or on the floor with support. 3-4 objects of varying textures placed within reach. If using food, ensure items are age-appropriate and safe.

How it works

  1. 1~30s

Place one of the textured items right in front of your child. Watch what they does — does your child reach out and grab it? Notice how they holds it. Is they using their whole hand or trying to pick it up with fingers? And watch their face — does they seem curious, excited, or a little unsure about the texture? Tell me what you see.

Watch for: Baby reaches for and grasps the textured object, using a whole-hand palmar grasp.

  2. 2~35s

Now let's offer your child a second texture — something that feels quite different from the first one. Place it next to the first item. Watch whether your child drops the first to grab the new one, or tries to hold both. Does they react differently to this texture? Some babies love bumpy things but pull away from sticky or squishy ones. What do you notice?

Watch for: Baby shows different reactions to different textures, indicating developing tactile discrimination.

  3. 3~40s

Here's a fun challenge — hand your child a toy in one hand, and then offer a second item to the same hand. Watch carefully — does your child switch the first toy to the other hand to free up space? Or does they drop it? Transferring objects between hands is a big milestone! Try it a couple of times and tell me what happens.

Watch for: Baby transfers an object from one hand to the other to free a hand for a new item.
