Watch the Hanging Object
Parent uses a string with a small object to demonstrate movement and disappearance, helping baby understand that objects continue to exist when out of sight. The agent guides the parent to observe visual tracking, anticipation, and early search behaviors — building object permanence and cognitive foundations.

What you'll need
Baby seated in supportive seat or on parent's lap, alert and attentive. Parent holds a string with a small safe object tied to the end. Object should be colorful and interesting to baby.
How it works
- 1~25s
Start by holding the string so the object hangs in front of your child. Gently swing it side to side like a pendulum. Watch your child's eyes — does they follow the object as it moves? Now slowly lift the object up and let it drop back down. Does your child anticipate the fall or follow the trajectory? Tell me what their eyes are doing.
Watch for: Baby visually tracks the hanging object and looks for it when it drops or moves out of sight.
- 2~30s
Now let's test object permanence more directly. While your child is watching, slowly lower the object behind your back or below the table edge so it disappears. Keep the string visible but hide the object itself. Does your child look for it? Does they lean forward, reach toward where it went, or look confused? Give them a moment to react, then bring it back.
Watch for: Baby actively searches for the object after it disappears from view — looking, leaning, or reaching.
- 3~30s
Let's try one more thing. Untie the object from the string and place it on a surface where your child can see it. While they is watching, cover it with a small cloth or blanket. Does your child try to pull the cloth off to find the object? Or does they seem to forget about it once it's covered? This is classic object permanence testing!
Watch for: Baby discovers an object hidden under a blanket or cloth by pulling the covering away.
