Salmon Squash Family Mash

Parent and child work together to prepare a simple salmon and squash mash, focusing on following multi-step instructions, measuring ingredients, and kitchen safety. The agent coaches the parent to observe sequencing skills, attention to detail, and collaborative participation in a real-world cooking task.

What you'll need

Kitchen workspace cleared and safe. Ingredients ready: cooked salmon, cooked squash/pumpkin, mixing bowl, fork/masher, measuring spoons. Child should be standing on a stable step stool if needed, with parent supervising closely.

How it works

  1. 1~45s

Let's start with the first three steps. First, have your child help you measure one cup of cooked squash and put it in the bowl. Second, show them how to flake the salmon with a fork, checking for bones. Third, add the salmon to the bowl. Give your child clear, one-at-a-time instructions and watch how they follows them. Does they remember what comes next? Does they complete each step before moving on?

Watch for: Child follows a sequence of 2-3 related instructions without needing reminders between steps.

  2. 2~40s

Now let's focus on measuring. Ask your child to measure out two tablespoons of olive oil and one teaspoon of lemon juice. Watch how they handles the measuring spoons — does they fill them level? Does they understand that 'tablespoon' is different from 'teaspoon'? This is early math in action!

Watch for: Child uses measuring tools appropriately, understanding different units and aiming for accurate amounts.

  3. 3~35s

Time to mash everything together! Show your child how to use the fork or masher safely — keeping fingers away from the mashing area. Then let them try. Watch for kitchen awareness — does your child hold the bowl steady? Does they mash carefully without splattering? Also notice if they tastes and comments on the flavor — that's sensory exploration!

Watch for: Child demonstrates basic kitchen safety awareness during food preparation tasks.
