Self-Awareness Stimulation
Parent sits with baby in front of a mirror, pointing at reflections and encouraging vocalizations. The agent guides the parent to observe whether baby reacts to their own reflection, responds to their name, and varies their tone when babbling -- building self-recognition and early social-emotional awareness.
Opens a guided voice session in TogetherTime.
What you'll need
Parent seated with baby in lap facing a large mirror. Room should be well-lit so reflections are clear.
How it works
- 1~30s
Now let your child look at the mirror. Give them a moment to take it in. Does your child notice the reflection? Watch for any reaction -- a smile, widening eyes, reaching toward the mirror, or a change in body movement. Point to your child's reflection and say their name. Tell me what happens.
Watch for: Baby reacts when seeing their own reflection -- smiling, reaching, or showing sustained interest.
- 2~30s
Now let's try pointing. Point to yourself in the mirror and say 'That is you!' Then point to your child's reflection and say 'your child!' Help your child point too -- gently guide their hand to point at your reflection and then at their own. Does your child look where you are pointing? Does they make any sounds?
Watch for: Baby shows a response when hearing their name -- turning, looking, or vocalizing.
- 3~30s
Let's make the mirror even more fun! Make different sounds at the mirror -- try a high voice, then a low voice, maybe a funny raspberry. See if your child tries to babble or make any sounds back. Does they vary their tone? Even little coos or gurgles count. The mirror adds an extra layer of fascination because your child can see your mouth moving. What sounds does your child make?
Watch for: Baby vocalizes with varied tones or attempts to imitate sounds while looking at mirror.
