What you'll need
Kitchen workspace cleared and safe for child participation. Ingredients: salmon fillets, honey, soy sauce, garlic, lemon. Tools: measuring spoons, small bowl, baking dish, spoon for mixing. Child should be able to reach counter with supervision.
How it works
- 1~45s
Let's start by preparing the glaze. Tell your child we need to make the sauce first before it goes on the salmon. Say: 'First, we measure the honey. Then we add soy sauce. Last, we mix in the garlic.' Guide your child through these three steps in order. Watch how they handles the sequence — does your child remember what comes next after each step? Does they get confused or follow along smoothly?
Watch for: Child follows a three-step sequence (measure honey, add soy sauce, mix garlic) with minimal prompting.
- 2~40s
Now let's focus on measurement. Give your child the measuring spoon and say 'We need one tablespoon of honey.' Watch how they approaches this. Does your child understand what 'one tablespoon' means? Does they try to fill it exactly to the brim, or pour randomly? After honey, ask for 'two teaspoons of soy sauce' — see if your child distinguishes between tablespoon and teaspoon amounts.
Watch for: Child demonstrates understanding of measurement terms (tablespoon, teaspoon) and attempts to measure accurately.
- 3~35s
For the final cooking step, give your child a two-part instruction: 'Take the lemon and squeeze it over the salmon, then use the spoon to spread the glaze evenly.' Make it one sentence without breaking it into separate commands. Watch how your child processes this — does they complete both parts? Does they remember the second part after doing the first?
Watch for: Child follows a two-part instruction (squeeze lemon, then spread glaze) without needing repetition.
