Different Sized Object Handling

Parent offers baby objects of varying sizes and observes how they grasp and hold them. The agent guides the parent to notice whether baby uses one or both hands, whether they open their hand in anticipation, and how they adapt their grip to different object sizes -- building fine motor coordination and tactile awareness.

What you'll need

Baby in supported sitting position or in parent's lap. Have one large soft object (stuffed animal, cushion) and one smaller object (rattle, small toy) within reach.

How it works

  1. 1~30s

Let's start with the big object. Hold the stuffed animal or cushion out toward your child and see what happens. Does they reach for it? Watch closely -- does your child use one hand or both hands to try and hold it? Tell me what you see.

Watch for: Baby uses both hands together to hold a large object.

  2. 2~25s

Now let's try the smaller object -- a rattle or small toy. Hold it out toward your child but pause just before placing it in their hand. Watch carefully -- does your child open their hand before you put the object in it? That anticipatory opening is a lovely sign of motor planning. What do you notice?

Watch for: Baby opens hand in anticipation to receive an object.

  3. 3~35s

Now let's alternate! Offer the big object, then swap to the small one, then back again. Watch how your child adjusts. Does they change from a two-handed grip to a one-handed grip? Does they reach out differently for different sizes? This adaptation is a wonderful sign of developing motor intelligence. Tell me what you observe.

Watch for: Baby adapts grasp strategy based on object size, reaching with both hands for large objects.
