Yummy Healthy Pancakes

Parent and child work together to make nutrient-packed pancakes, focusing on following multi-step instructions, measuring ingredients, and observing cooking transformations. The agent coaches the parent to observe executive function, sequencing skills, and scientific curiosity during this collaborative cooking activity.

What you'll need

Kitchen counter with ingredients and measuring tools (cups, spoons, bowls). Child should be able to safely reach the counter with supervision. Have mixing bowl, whisk/spoon, and skillet ready. Ensure cooking area is safe and child is supervised near heat.

How it works

  1. 1~45s

Let's start by reading the recipe steps together. First, we need to mix the dry ingredients: one cup of flour and one teaspoon of baking powder. Can you ask your child to find the measuring cup and spoon? Then guide them through measuring each ingredient into the bowl. Watch how your child handles the sequence — does they remember what comes next after measuring the flour? Does they need reminders or can they follow two-step instructions independently?

Watch for: Child follows two-step instructions (like 'get the cup, then measure flour') with minimal prompting.

  2. 2~40s

Now let's add the wet ingredients. We need one egg and half a cup of milk. This is a great chance to observe measurement skills. Ask your child to crack the egg into a small bowl first (to check for shells), then pour the milk. Watch how your child handles the measuring cup — does they check the line at eye level? Does they understand concepts like 'half' or 'full'? Tell me what you notice about their measuring approach.

Watch for: Child demonstrates understanding of measurement by checking levels and using terms like 'half' or 'full.'

  3. 3~50s

Time to cook! Mix the wet and dry ingredients together, then pour a small pancake onto the heated skillet. This is where science happens. Point out how the batter changes — bubbles form, edges firm up, color turns golden. Ask your child what they notices changing. Does they comment on the transformation? Does they make predictions about when to flip? Watch for curiosity about the cooking process.

Watch for: Child observes and comments on changes during cooking (bubbles, color change, texture).
