What you'll need

Parent and child sitting together in a calm, dimly lit space appropriate for bedtime. Have black/dark paper, aluminum foil, and optional glue within reach. Child should be in pajamas and ready for wind-down.

How it works

  1. 1~30s

Start by showing your child the aluminum foil. Say 'Look, this is shiny like the moon!' Gently hand it to them and encourage them to crumple it into a ball. Use a soft, calm voice. Watch how your child responds to this quiet invitation. Does they take the foil? Does they seem interested in the texture and sound? Tell me what you notice.

Watch for: Child engages calmly in a quiet, shared activity during bedtime routine, showing positive social connection.

  2. 2~35s

Now help your child carefully open the crumpled foil and flatten it out. Use simple, gentle requests: 'Can you help me smooth the moon?' or 'Let's make it flat together.' Notice if your child follows these simple directions. Does they help press the foil? Does they look at you when you speak in that quiet bedtime voice?

Watch for: Child follows simple one-step requests or instructions during a calm activity.

  3. 3~40s

Now place the flattened foil 'moon' on the dark paper. If you have glue, help your child stick it down; if not, just place it together. Use this moment for quiet conversation. Say things like 'The moon is sleeping in the night sky' or 'Goodnight, moon.' Watch your child's emotional state. Does they become calmer during this gentle interaction? Does their breathing slow? Does they lean into you or show signs of relaxing?

Watch for: Child shows signs of calming and emotional regulation during a quiet, bonding bedtime activity.
