What you'll need
Baby securely in car seat. Parent driving safely. Can use car audio system or parent's singing voice. Best done when baby is awake but potentially fussy or needing calming.
How it works
- 1~40s
Start by playing some gentle, calming music — something with a slow tempo and soft melodies. Classical music, lullabies, or nature sounds work well. Watch your child in the mirror or glance back when safe. Does your child seem to notice the music? You might see their eyes widen, their body relax, or they might become more still. Tell me what you observe.
Watch for: Baby shows a calming response to gentle music — relaxing body, settling fussiness, or showing focused attention.
- 2~35s
Now try singing along to the music or singing a simple lullaby on your own. It doesn't have to be perfect — just your voice, steady and warm. Watch for your child's response to your singing specifically. Does they make any sounds back? Coo, sigh, or vocalize? Does their facial expression change when they hears your voice versus the recorded music?
Watch for: Baby vocalizes or coos in response to parent's singing, showing early communicative exchange.
- 3~30s
For the last few minutes, focus on creating a shared calming moment. You might lower the music volume, sing very softly, or even just hum while driving. Notice if your child maintains a calm, content state. Does they make eye contact with you in the mirror? Does their body language show relaxation and trust? This shared musical space is about bonding as much as calming.
Watch for: Baby shows signs of bonding and connection during shared musical experience — relaxed body, eye contact, content expression.
