Nursing Storytime

Parent reads a simple storybook while nursing or bottle-feeding baby, creating a calm, bonding experience that combines nourishment with language exposure. The agent coaches the parent to observe baby's attention to the story, visual tracking of pictures, and social engagement during this intimate shared moment.

What you'll need

Parent and baby in comfortable feeding position — nursing or bottle-feeding. Have a simple board book with clear pictures nearby. Environment should be calm and quiet. Baby should be alert enough to look at pictures but calm enough to feed.

How it works

  1. 1~30s

Start feeding your child as you normally would. Once they is settled, hold up the book so they can see the pictures. Point to a picture and say something simple like 'Look, your child, a dog!' Watch their eyes — does they look at the picture you're pointing to? Does they glance between your face and the book? Tell me what you notice.

Watch for: Baby looks at an object the parent is pointing to or talking about, then looks back at parent, showing shared focus.

  2. 2~35s

Now try turning the page slowly. As you reveal the new picture, watch your child's eyes. Does they follow the movement of the page? Does their gaze move from the old picture to the new one? You might also try moving your finger slowly across the page — following a line in the illustration or tracing an animal's shape. Does your child track your finger with their eyes?

Watch for: Baby follows moving visual stimuli with eyes — tracking page turns or parent's finger movements across pictures.

  3. 3~40s

Now let's focus on the overall mood. As you continue reading softly, notice your child's body language. Is they relaxed against you? Does they occasionally look up at your face while feeding? Does the combination of feeding and your calm voice seem to create a peaceful, connected moment? Tell me about your child's emotional state during this shared storytime.

Watch for: Baby shows calm, relaxed engagement during close physical contact combined with soothing verbal interaction.
