Diaper Change Turn-Taking

Parent engages toddler in a playful imitation game during diaper changes, taking turns making silly sounds and copying each other. The agent coaches the parent to observe turn-taking skills, imitation accuracy, and emotional regulation during a routine task — building executive function and social reciprocity.

What you'll need

Toddler on changing table or mat. Diaper changing supplies within reach. Best done when toddler is calm but alert — not overly tired or hungry. No additional materials needed.

How it works

  1. 1~30s

Start by making a silly sound — maybe roar like a lion, buzz like a bee, or make a funny 'blub-blub' noise. Make it dramatic and fun! Then invite your child to copy you: 'Your turn! Can you roar like me?' Watch closely — does your child try to make the same sound? Even an approximation counts. Tell me what happens.

Watch for: Toddler waits for parent's turn, then attempts to imitate the sound when invited, showing basic turn-taking structure.

  2. 2~35s

Now switch roles! Ask your child: 'Can you make a sound for me to copy?' Give them a moment to think. If they makes any sound — even a simple 'ba' or giggle — immediately imitate it exactly. Then ask for another. Notice if your child seems to understand the reversed roles — does they watch to see if you copy correctly? Does they try different sounds?

Watch for: Toddler produces intentional sounds for parent to imitate and observes whether parent copies accurately.

  3. 3~40s

Keep the game going through the rest of the diaper change. Take a few more turns — you make a sound, your child copies, then they makes a sound, you copy. Notice their emotional state: is your child staying engaged and cheerful through the routine? Does the game help them cooperate with diaper changes? Even if they gets wiggly, does they return to the game when you restart?

Watch for: Toddler maintains positive engagement and cooperation during diaper change through playful turn-taking.
