Walking on the Line

Parent creates masking tape lines on the floor and encourages toddler to walk along them during daily transitions. The agent coaches the parent to observe balance, coordination, and motor planning as the child navigates the paths — building gross motor skills and making transitions playful.

What you'll need

Clear floor space (hard surface works best). Have masking tape ready. Create straight and slightly curved lines (2-3 feet long) leading to common transition spots like the high chair, play area, or door. Ensure area is safe and free of tripping hazards.

How it works

  1. 1~40s

Let's start with a simple straight line. Guide your child to the start of the tape line and say, 'Let's walk on the line!' You can hold their hand if they needs support. Watch how your child approaches the line — does they step right onto it? Does they look down at their feet? Notice their balance and whether they tries to stay on the tape. Tell me what you see.

Watch for: Child walks while holding parent's hand for balance, showing coordinated stepping with support.

  2. 2~45s

Now let's see if your child will try a few steps without holding your hand. Stand at the end of the line and encourage them to walk to you. You might say, 'Come walk to me on the line!' Hold your arms out. Watch for independent steps — even just 2-3 steps on the tape counts. Does your child lift their feet deliberately? Does they look at the line while walking?

Watch for: Child takes several independent steps along the tape line without support.

  3. 3~50s

Let's add a fun challenge. Place a small toy or stuffed animal at the end of a curved line. Ask your child to walk to get it. You can also try having them hold a toy while walking. Watch how your child manages dual tasks — walking on the line while carrying something or focusing on a goal. Does they adjust their steps? Does they look ahead at the toy?

Watch for: Child walks along the line while holding a small toy, showing divided attention and coordination.
