What you'll need
Parent and baby in comfortable feeding position — breastfeeding, bottle feeding, or even during a snack if breastfeeding isn't happening. Environment should be calm and quiet. No materials needed beyond feeding supplies.
How it works
- 1~40s
As your child begins to feed, start by making gentle eye contact. Then begin sharing one of your favorite memories — maybe a trip you took, a special day with family, or a happy moment from your childhood. Speak in a warm, storytelling voice. Watch your child's face closely — does they maintain eye contact? Does their body relax into the feeding? Tell me what you notice about their engagement.
Watch for: Baby shows signs of secure attachment during intimate feeding time — relaxed body, maintained eye contact, calm feeding rhythm.
- 2~35s
Now, as you continue your story, try adding gentle touch. Stroke your child's back, arm, or head softly while you speak. Notice if your child responds to the touch — does they snuggle closer? Does their feeding rhythm change? Some babies will pause feeding briefly to enjoy the touch, then resume. Watch for these subtle signs of connection.
Watch for: Baby maintains engaged eye contact with parent during combined verbal storytelling and gentle touch.
- 3~45s
As your child finishes feeding or takes a break, pause your story and wait. See if they makes any sounds — a contented sigh, a babble, a coo. When your child vocalizes, respond as if they just commented on your story! Say something like, 'You're right, that was a beautiful beach!' or 'Tell me more about what you think.' Watch if your child responds to your conversational turn-taking with more sounds or engagement.
Watch for: Baby vocalizes in response to parent's storytelling and engages in conversational turn-taking.
